Publication name: strategy+business

Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The mission of strategy+business (s+b) is to provide business executives and thought leaders in government, academia and the private sector with commentary, research, and practical ideas that bridge the gap between management theory and practice. Alone among major business publications, s+b draws on a combination of journalists, academics, consultants, and corporate strategists to contribute articles that set the agenda for global industry and commerce.
strategy+business has a global audience of more than 600,000 readers, including print and digital subscribers as well as website registrants. More than 150,000 people receive s+b’s weekly and monthly e-newsletters, over 80,000 subscribe to s+b’s digital edition and apps, and more than 170,000 interact with s+b on social media channels. According to a recent study analyzing s+b’s circulation, 42 percent of s+b print readers are C-suite executives ranked vice president or higher. Our audience includes decision makers at small firms, managers rising within large companies, prominent academics, and others with an interest in understanding the business and management systems, practices, and ideas that define our world.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
For the 20th anniversary of strategy+business, the editors of s+b thought we’d celebrate our magazine’s history by tracking the most influential business ideas throughout history. We invited some of the most insightful business historians and observers we know to a workshop. Participants came prepared with lists of what they considered the milestones of management history. We spent the day posting ideas on a conference room wall, grouping them, and trying to get to the heart of each with an incisive phrase or reference.
We ended up with about 400 entries, more or less organized by theme. Then we refined them to the version you see in the ebook. We found that each group of ideas could be fairly well summed up in a single question and there happened to be about 20 of them — 20 questions for 20 years of s+b, a heartening coincidence.
This ebook is an initial taste of the result: a browsable, ever-increasing compilation of management ideas, recast and reframed as we think only s+b can do it. It’s a kind of genealogy chart of management ideas, showing their sources, their influences, and a little bit about how they are put into practice.
