When Computerworld senior editor Matt Hamblen, already well established as one of the premier reporters on smart cities technologies, traveled with a video crew to Singapore to attend a state-sponsored smart cities conference, he and video producer Alayne Brady saw right away that the story was not on the convention center stage – where presenters tend to focus on sensors, computer consoles, network wiring and data analytics -- but out on the streets, in the hospitals and classrooms of Singapore, where ordinary citizens are able to experience and benefit from all that technology.
In a far-ranging, week-long exploration of the city-state of Singapore, Hamblen talks to everyone from Steve Leonard, the chief executive of a new government entity dedicated to smart city innovation, to Dr. Steven Tucker, who explains, over bowls of Mei Fun noodles, how Singapore is using smart technologies to care for its aging population.
Likewise, on-site visits to a hospital, preschool, elementary school, and a tech incubator known as BASH (Building Amazing Startups Here) allow Hamblen and our viewers to see these technological innovations in action, rather than simply described in a diagram. Fittingly, Hamblen ends his visit over iced Kachang tea with lifelong resident Sarah Pereira, who movingly talks about Singapore’s progress and considerable challenges in the context of the constant hyperchange that is part of the Singaporean identity.
