Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Computerworld identifies, unpacks and offers guidance about the most pressing management and technology challenges facing IT and business technology leaders, as well as the latest personal technologies and trends. Computerworld is outspoken and authoritative, and relies on the hard-won insights of the IT users it champions to offer readers behind-the-scenes examples of how organizations implement technology, manage projects and personnel, and adapt to IT change.
Computerworld.com posts dozens of stories by staff reporters, feature writers and bloggers each week, delivering a wide range of breaking news, features, analysis, videos, image galleries, RSS feeds, research and resource materials, as well as premium content for registered "Insider" readers. Our website, updated continually during the business week and when major news breaks after-hours and on weekends, also includes stories from the IDG News Service and several of our sister technology publications. Readers can also follow our stories on Twitter and on social media sites such as Facebook and Google+.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
When interim CIOs ride into town, they can call the shots – even deliver bad news and take the bullets. Highly qualified and rich in experience, these IT guns-for-hire possess a unique blend of IT expertise, business smarts and boardroom savvy. Rather than commit to cubicle life, interim CIOs transition from one client to the next with contracts typically spanning from three months to two years, and annual earnings of six figures. The job requires intestinal fortitude and entrepreneurial spirit in those who choose to pass up a steady salary, health insurance and stock options for the independence and breadth of experience offered by a string of fast-paced, high-stakes projects. Since there’s no knowing how long a lapse will last in between gigs, interim CIOs must be willing to weather the feast-or-famine fluctuations that accompany self-employment. Then there’s the moxie – and mercilessness – required of interim CIOs to make tough decisions, regardless of who gets hurt. “An interim CIO will take on the challenges that a sitting CIO will not.”
