Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE is the voice of the affordable housing industry. It is written for and read by for-profit and nonprofit developers, community development bankers and financiers, and housing officials from all levels of government. The magazine’s audience is responsible for the creation of affordable housing across the nation. AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE serves as a common thread that weaves through the industry, connecting developers with one another each month through profiles and interviews. Its readers work in a highly technical and specialized field, and AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE serves their unique needs with hard-hitting content focused on financing options, development strategies, and housing policy.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Women in senior management positions in the United States have increased a mere 1% in the past 10 years. Recognizing the lack of women in top roles in business, including real estate, Affordable Housing Finance (AHF) for the first time, in its March 2016 issue, identified and highlighted 10 of the most influential women in affordable housing. The group includes developers, financiers, advocates, and policymakers. The story isn’t meant to fete the women, however; rather, it’s intended to share what they and their firms are doing and show why they’re important to the larger industry. The feature also calls attention to the significant role these individuals play in affordable housing, a field that serves a large number of women. The poverty rate for families with a female householder was nearly 31%, compared with 16% for families with a male householder, in 2014.
In preparing the article, AHF reporters researched the absence of women in top business positions and worked with industry members to identify and vet the profiled women. The writers interviewed the women in order to share their work and words of wisdom with readers. AHF further brought the feature story to life at the magazine’s annual developers conference in the fall. Several of the profiled women participated in the popular “Women in Affordable Housing Roundtable” that took place at the show.
