Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) promotes the common professional and business interests of in-house counsel who work for corporations, associations, and other private-sector organizations through information, education, networking opportunities, and advocacy initiatives. ACC Docket is the official journal of ACC and the only professional journal written by in-house counsel for in-house counsel. ACC Docket provides our members (in-house attorneys) with timely news and practical advice that they can apply to their daily practice.
Every issue balances substantive feature articles with member news and profiles that promote fellowship within the organization. After all, it is this sense of community that makes ACC such a successful nonprofit association. We try to balance informative content with innovative design, and we pride ourselves on our eye-catching covers and feature spreads that convey complex legal topics in an artistic manner. ACC Docket’s primary goal is to balance dense, substantive feature articles with more accessible content, such as columns, promotional announcements, chapter news, and member spotlights.
We promote this strategy in an effort to offer our members a wide variety of content without sacrificing a sense of community. Our subscribers value both the action-oriented advice and research that our articles provide, and have come to recognize the unique aesthetic that the ACC Docket has come to represent over 30 years in print.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Career Path is one of the ACC Docket's most popular columns. Our longtime contributor, Bill Mordan — general counsel of Shire plc — has become a fixture of our magazine, dispensing concise wisdom on the professional journeys that in-house counsel take to find success. 2016 marks the last year that Mordan will contribute to ACC Docket, after writing the column for 10 years.
In his September column, entitled "The Trolley Problem," Mordan provides a nuanced take to a classic philosophy dilemma. Imagine you are the conductor of a trolley and you notice five workers on the tracks. If you act quickly, you can divert the trolley away from the crowd. The only problem is that a single person will certainly be hit as a result. Mordan uses this scenario as a metaphor, challenging our readers to think of the decision as one of the many risks that in-house counsel face on a daily basis.
In his November column, "The Power of Patience," Mordan makes a powerful and comical connection between parenting and the attorney-client relationship. Through this connection, Mordan masterfully showcases his quick wit and thought provoking writing style by providing myriad strategic "parental" responses that are necessary to client success. It's not easy to balance a light tone with genuine advice for professionals, but Mordan does so with ease. Through the Career Path column, Mordan's 10 years of expertise has left an indelible mark on our magazine.
