Autism at the Waterpark: A Fine Line
Issue date (if applicable): 8/29/2016
Publication name: Aquatics International
Publishing company: Hanley Wood
Website home page: www.aquaticsintl.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Aquatics International serves the commercial pool industry and the unique needs of the people who design, operate and service them. A typical AI reader manages an aquatics facility, provides attractive programming tailored to their community, trains and manages effective lifeguards, and maintains all required equipment. Water safety and drowning prevention are of particular importance to this audience. Aquatics International is published 10 times a year and maintains a robust online presence.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Our team informs two separate but related groups -- the pool/spa and aquatics industries. We enjoy a wide range of readers, from pool contractors to lifeguards to waterpark managers. The sheer number of disciplines involved keeps things interesting for our staff. Depending on their jobs, a reader’s mix of skills can include any combination of design, construction, management, marketing, sales, lifeguarding, merchandising, event planning, maintenance, cleaning and repairing – not to mention training on subjects relating to any of these disciplines.
This feature addresses a specific and increasing challenge in the world of waterparks – making the process of waiting in long lines more comfortable for visitors who live with autism. In this feature package, we guide waterpark operators on how to piece together an inclusive park policy. Included are guidelines for line management programs, specific instructions on how to communicate with autistic children and two case studies (one of which is a video) of waterparks that were successful in developing park policies and staff training programs sensitive to these special needs guests.
